CALEA Accreditation
The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies
was established in 1979. The goal of the Commission is to establish and maintain
standards for the operation of law enforcement agencies. This process is NOT
currently required. If an agency chooses to participate, that agency must
be able to comply with, and be able to prove compliancy for well over 400
standards. An audit of these proofs occurs every 3 years, with at least yearly
contact checks from the Commission. Meeting these standards requires hard
work and constant effort from each member of the law enforcement agency. There
are at least 400 eligible agencies in North Carolina and only 23 are CALEA
Accredited. Morehead City Police Department is one of those 23 agencies, proving
that our efforts to be regulated, responsible, and professional are a huge
success! (MCPD Accredited since August 1998, next assessment for reaccreditation will be in 2007.) www.calea.org
The purpose of the Chaplaincy program is to provide pastoral
care to all members of the Police Department, both sworn and civilian, and
their families in time of need and/or crisis. The Chaplain also provides needed
services to the members of the community through the Police Department. The
services of the Chaplain are available on the basis of need and desire. They
are not intended, nor do they wish to replace an individual's clergy person.
The goal of the Morehead City Citizen's Police Academy is to
build a stronger relationship between the community and the Police Department.
We want to use this program to educate and gain feedback from the community.
The academy covers topics such as fingerprinting, jail tours, narcotics, DWI
& intoxilyzer, ride along with officers, domestic violence, etc. The course
is about 9 weeks long, once a week, and is free. All citizens are welcome
to join in this educational experience. (Contact Us for more information,
dates, and times)

D.A.R.E
D.A.R.E. is Drug Abuse Resistance Education. We have officers
going into our local schools and community to teach drug awareness to our
youth. It is important that we keep our strong minds of tomorrow drug free
today! For the official D.A.R.E. web site click here:

Domestic Violence
M.A.D.D. (Mothers Against Drunk Driving)
The Police Department and the Carteret County MADD Chapter
work together to discourage impaired drivers. We fight drinking and driving
with several powerful programs. For example the Citizen Police Academy, MADD
Tree of Life, Specialized Traffic Unit, DWI Checkpoints, as well as other
programs.
Operation ID
The Police Department has engravers available to assist our residents
in marking their personal items in their home. Such as small appliances, televisions,
stereos, vcrs, etc. Marked items are less likely to be stolen, and more
likely to be found, and the crime more quickly solved when personal belongings
have identifiable numbers or characters.
Public Housing Specialist
The Public Housing Specialist provides Community Policing for
public housing areas. Some ways to accomplish this is to become familiar with
the residents of assigned public housing neighborhoods and assist the residents
in indentifying problems and concerns; to respond to calls for service within
the assigned housing community; to work with the residents and youth of the
neighborhood to provide education and information in an effort to prevent crime,
community decay, and to enhance the quality of life. The Public Housing Specialist
is a direct connection between the residents and many government, recreational,
law enforcement, and other community programs.
School Resource Officers
Your child's school is safe, and doesn't need a police officer
on-site?
Absolutely right! The schools and students want a resource officer available
to help prevent unwanted situations and to maintain a safe and secure environment
on school campuses. School resource officers promote positive relations between
youth and law enforcement. They help provide a friendly connection between students
and faculty. They provide instruction and training to assist students with handling
conflict, peer pressure, decision making, and self-esteem.
Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch
Run
Each year, Law Enforcement Officers from across the state raise
money for Special Olympics North Carolina (SONC) by conducting The Law Enforcement
Torch Run for Special Olympics. Since 1986, when The Torch Run began, it has
grown consistently every year. Through the efforts of hundreds of officers,
The Torch Run has contributed more than $3.2 million to North Carolina since
it's inception.
